Girls soccer playoffs: 16 area schools qualify, Pikes Peak sweeps 4A

The Pikes Peak region will be well represented during the girls soccer postseason.

The Colorado High School Activities Association on Sunday released brackets for the 5A-2A state playoffs, and 16 area schools qualified for the tournament, which begins Tuesday with 5A contests.

This year, 5A first- and second-round games will be hosted by the higher seed, and the quarterfinals will occur at Englewood High School on May 11. For 4A-2A, the higher seed will host through quarterfinals.

Semifinals begin May 14 for 5A-3A and May 16 for 2A. Each semifinal will take place at neutral sites.

In 5A, semifinalists will head to the University of Denver’s Pioneer Field; 4A teams play at Highlands Ranch Stadium at Redstone; 3A schools compete at the University of Northern Colorado’s Jackson Field; and 2A will take place at North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

Palmer Ridge received top billing in 4A after the Bears finished the regular season 13-1-1. The No. 1-seeded Bears will look to navigate through the 32-team bracket and open the tournament Wednesday against No. 32 Thomas Jefferson.

The Bears closed the regular season on a four-match winning streak and outscored their opponents 20-3 in those games. But the Bears aren’t the lone area school that secured a top three seed in 4A.

Rampart ended the regular season 12-2 and is the No. 2 seed behind the Bears. The Rams will open the playoffs against No. 31 Cañon City on Wednesday in the first meeting between the two schools.

Air Academy secured the No. 3 seed with an 11-2-1 record and will open the postseason Wednesday against No. 30 Glenwood Springs for their first match since 2012.

The Kadets handed the top-seeded Bears their only loss of the year, closed the regular season 7-0-1 and have not lost since April 1.

Pine Creek is one of two area 5A schools in the tournament and the Eagles earned the No. 4 seed.

The Eagles have an 11-1-2 record and dropped their only contest March 10. Since then, Pine Creek has allowed just five goals in 11 matches and has shut out eight opponents.

Below is the first round schedule for area schools.
