The average price for a gallon of gas in Colorado Springs has surpassed $4.

Travel Agency AAA Colorado reported on Tuesday the average price in the city is $4.135 per gallon. This is an increase of about 37 cents compared to a week ago, and about 23 cents compared to a month ago. Statewide, the average is $4.128 per gallon.

Diesel also increased to $5.156 per gallon, up from last week’s average of $4.949 and last month’s average of $4.940, according to AAA Colorado.

The latest round of pain at the pump follows national trends, which saw the average price for a gallon of gas increase 5.7 cents compared to last month, and 94.3 cents compared to last year, according to GasBuddy. The online firm, known for sharing where consumers can find the cheapest gas in their area, attributed the latest increase to markets reacting as peace talks between the U.S. and Iran collapsed.

“Many inland states — including those in the Great Lakes and Plains — could see average gas prices climb to their highest levels since 2022, while price-cycling markets may also experience another round of hikes in the next few days,” said Patrick De Haan, the company’s head of petroleum analysis. The Colorado markets adjusted on Monday, he said.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched the war against Iran a month ago, the cost of crude oil — the main ingredient in gasoline — has spiked and swung rapidly. That’s because the conflict has caused deep supply chain disruptions and cuts from major oil producers across the Middle East, according to the Associated Press.

In March, President Donald Trump waived some EPA summer gasoline requirements in a bid to ease pressure on American consumers. Summer blends are formulated to evaporate more slowly during the the hot months, easing pollution, according to CBS News.

“Winter blends, on average, save consumers about 15 cents per gallon… Broadly, things are still volatile and that means uncertain,” said Skyler McKinley, a AAA Colorado spokesman. “I promise that in my lifetime, prices will rise and prices will fall. It’s predicated on delicate international relationships.”

Even as prices rise, De Haan with Gasbuddy remains optimistic, though realistic.

“(Prices) may inch lower for the next few days, but it’s hard to forecast because of ongoing uncertainty,” he said.
