Colorado College, Arizona State announce Ed Robson Cup coming this fall

Colorado College hockey has gained a new rival.

On Tuesday, CC and Arizona State announced the establishment of the Ed Robson Cup, a trophy annually awarded to the winner of the regular-season series between the Tigers and Sun Devils.

The trophy will debut in the upcoming 2026-2027 season.

Robson is the namesake of CC’s Ed Robson Arena, which opened in 2021. Robson attended CC and played hockey and baseball while earning his bachelor’s degree in business and banking. He graduated in 1954 and his late wife, LaNelle Beck Robson, graduated in 1958. They had five children together, including CC alumnus Steven Robson, who graduated in 1979.

Following his time at CC, Robson joined the Marines. In 1955, he was granted leave to play hockey for Team USA and the next year he was selected to the U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Today, Robson is married to Karrin Taylor Robson, who graduated from Arizona State. She is the founder and president of land-use firm Arizona Strategies and served on the Arizona Board of Regents.

“As we announce the creation of the Ed Robson Cup, we are filled with gratitude for Ed and Karrin, whose unwavering support and dedication have been instrumental in revitalizing our hockey program,” Colorado College coach Kris Mayotte said in a release. “This trophy represents Ed’s incredible legacy and the commitment to excellence he and his family have instilled in our program. In celebrating the competition this cup embodies, we look forward to our matchup with Arizona State growing into an exciting and passionate rivalry. As we honor Ed’s contributions, we embark on this thrilling journey ahead, forever thankful for the foundation he has helped build in our program and community.”

The Tigers add the Ed Robson Cup to its two other rivalries with Air Force (Pikes Peak Trophy) and Denver (Gold Pan).

The Sun Devils lead the all-time series 8-7-3.

“This is a tremendous honor and opportunity for our program to play for a trophy and develop a rivalry with a historic program like CC that has been around for almost 100 years,” Arizona State coach Greg Powers said in a release. “The Robson family means so much to both institutions and so it’s only fitting that this trophy is named after Mr. Robson.”

Given that both CC and ASU are in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, the cup will be decided by points toward league standings. Three points are awarded for a regulation win, zero are given for a regulation loss. Two points are given for an overtime or shootout win and one point is awarded for an overtime or shootout loss.

The cup cannot change hands in the event of a points split and in such a case, the team in possession of the cup would retain it.

This upcoming season, the Tigers and Sun Devils play two games against each other with CC traveling to Tempe, Ariz., Dec. 4-5.
