Colorado Springs weather: Much-needed moisture on tap this week
Colorado Springs is expected to receive some much-needed moisture in the coming days as a relatively dry April comes to a close, according to Gazette news partner KOAA.
This week, “we’ll swap out high fire danger for much needed moisture with a near daily shot at showers and thunderstorms across Southern Colorado,” said News 5 Meteorologist Alan Rose.
Typically, the average April precipitation in Colorado Springs is 1.45 inches, according to data from the National Weather Service in Pueblo. So far, the monthly total has been 0.35 inches. Those numbers should get a boost this week.
“All signs are pointing towards some beneficial moisture, i.e., a spring soaker,” Rose said.
Colorado Springs could see showers and thunderstorms between noon and 3 p.m. Monday. New rainfall is expected to amount to less than one-tenth of an inch, but higher amounts are possible in the event of a thunderstorm. The high temperature should be in the low 60s, which is near average for this time of year, Rose said.
“Rain will increase in coverage Thursday afternoon before tapering off Friday afternoon,” he said.
Snow is possible in the higher elevations (7,000-8,000 feet) later in the week, which could make for some slick road conditions in Teller County and across the Palmer Divide.
Here is the week’s forecast from the National Weather Service:
Tuesday: A 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.
Wednesday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 60.
Thursday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. High near 52. Light north-northeast wind becoming east 5-10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Friday: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Northeast wind 5-10 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.
