Avalanche vs. Kings | 3 takeaways from Colorado’s sweep-clinching win
LOS ANGELES – The Avalanche came equipped with brooms and were able to use them, beating the Kings in Game 4 and moving on to the second round.
Here are three takeaways from Colorado’s 5-1 win on Sunday.
A power play adjustment
Colorado’s power play had been powerless in the first three games of the series, but a quick adjustment off a faceoff win changed that.
The Avalanche set up on the right wall with Nazem Kadri and Gabriel Landeskog playing a little give-and-go, looking for Nathan MacKinnon in the bumper spot. MacKinnon quickly moved out of there as there was no room, which opened up a huge lane for Kadri to hit him for a one-timer as he drifted back to the left wall.
The puck snuck through Anton Forsberg, giving the Avalanche their first power-play goal of the series and MacKinnon his first goal.
Lehkonen keeps it going
Artturi Lehkonen is one of Jared Bednar’s “Mr. Everythings,” and he’s shown that all series long.
His relentless work on Artemi Panarin on an early Kings power play was impressive, as he stuck with Artemi Panarin like glue before eventually just outworking him to clear the puck.
As the game went on, Bednar swapped Lehkonen and Landeskog in the lineup, moving Lehkonen to the third line with Kadri and Roy.
That line was on the ice for Cale Makar’s magical goal in the second period and created another goal in the third. With the game 4-1, Lehkonen was forechecking as if his life depended on it.
He’s built different.
Patience pays dividends
It took about 10 periods for the Avalanche to get the Kings to open up a little bit and when they did, it was all over.
Remarkably, the Avalanche were able to stay patient for as long as they did, and it shows a tremendous amount of maturity within the group.
The Kings gave up more odd-man rushes in the third period than they did all series.
