Colorado Springs weather: High fire danger persists Friday, chance of showers later in the weekend

Above-average temperatures and conditions leading to high fire danger are forecast Friday for the Colorado Springs area, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

A high near 72 is expected in Colorado Springs, about 10 degrees above average for April 24. With winds ranging from 10 to 15 mph, the Weather Service has a red flag warning in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for all of southeastern Colorado and as far west as the central mountains near Salida, Buena Vista and Leadville.

A high of 66 is forecast Saturday and 63 Sunday, when the chance of rain is 80%, the Weather Service said.

“On Sunday, we’ll see continued upslope flow and some instability that will spark off isolated showers and thunderstorms,” said Casey Dorn, a meteorologist with Gazette news partner KOAA.

The past week has included above-average temperatures and a lack of moisture, leading to multiple wildfires in the Pikes Peak region.

Colorado Springs has seen 0.08 inches of precipitation in April; the normal this time of the month is 1.02 inches, according to the Weather Service.
