Broadway musical ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ makes stop in Colorado Springs

Comedian Robin Williams delighted us as a wise and athletic Scottish nanny in the 1993 film “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

He starred as Daniel, an out-of-work actor who loses custody of his three kids in a messy divorce. To stay in their lives, he creates the character Euphegenia Doubtfire, whom his ex-wife hires to care for the kids.

It’s akin to Dustin Hoffman’s humorous turn as an out-of-work actor who transforms into a middle-aged woman and nabs a soap opera role in the 1982 film “Tootsie.”

“Mrs. Doubtfire,” based on Anne Fine’s 1987 novel, “Madame Doubtfire,” was transformed into a musical by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. Popular musical numbers include “What the Hell,” “Make Me a Woman,” “Big Fat No” and “Easy Peasy.”

The new Broadway tour will stop by Pikes Peak Center for three shows at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and April 30, $56-$137; pikespeakcenter.com, axs.com.

Before its 2021 Broadway debut, the pandemic shut the musical down during previews. It first opened in Seattle in 2019.

“Strange as it may be to say,” wrote critic Frank Schec for The Hollywood Reporter, “getting shut down by the pandemic might have been the best thing to happen to ‘Mrs. Doubtfire.’ For one thing, the long hiatus gave some breathing room between this adaptation of the hit 1993 movie starring Robin Williams and ‘Tootsie,’ the short-lived Broadway musical also revolving around a straight man who dresses in drag. For another, it provided the opportunity for the creators to do some apparently much-needed tinkering, as evidenced by early reports. Finally, the long theatrical dry spell has created a renewed appetite for a feel-good, family-friendly musical comedy. At a late preview performance, you could feel the audience’s desire to simply relax and have a good time.”
