Avalanche vs. Kings | 3 takeaways from Colorado’s 4-2 win in Game 3

LOS ANGELES — The road warriors that are the Colorado Avalanche claimed another one.

Here are three takeaways from a 4-2 triumph at Crypto.com Arena to take a 3-0 series lead in Game 3:

  1. The Avalanche made their first lineup change of the series, inserting Ross Colton for Joel Kiviranta. Rather than putting Colton on the fourth line where Kiviranta was playing, they put him on the second line with Brock Nelson and Valeri Nichushkin, a trio that has had success this season. They didn’t create much offense, but Colton did throw a large hit on the forecheck in the second that generated a good look for Nicolas Roy.

2. Josh Manson took a hit late in the first period that caused him to leave the bench. He returned in the second period for one shift, a shift that did not go well. His pass was deflected, leading to a turnover. He then lost his man to the net, who scored to tie up the game. In the process, he high-sticked Kings forward Trevor Moore, putting him in the penalty box. After the Avalanche killed off the penalty, Manson went to the locker room, never to return. Nick Blankenburg, acquired at the trade deadline, would be the defenseman on the roster that could replace him if he’s unable to play in Game 4. Blankenburg and Manson could not be more different in terms of how they play, so a swap like that would change the look of Colorado’s defense quite significantly.

3. This was, perhaps, Colorado’s worst game of the series in terms of the scoring chances they gave up, but Scott Wedgewood covered up a lot of those mistakes. It was another great game for Wedgewood, who has earned the net this series. Another player who has really stepped up is Brent Burns, who doesn’t play that physically in the regular season but has increased his physicality this series.
