In this weekly feature, we’re celebrating the best of Colorado Springs’ food and drink scene — as determined by voters in the 2025 Best of the Springs (thebestofthesprings.com). We’ll throw in our own recommendation, too. 

Up this week: Fries. 

Gold: Five Guys 

There have been some recent headlines and fervor about Five Guys replacing the fry-holding cups with paper bags. The fervor was understood: Loyalists want nothing changed. They want the fries just as they’ve always had them: Idaho potatoes hand-cut and fried in peanut oil. And yes, straight for plucking from the cup. Multiple locations 

Silver: Skirted Heifer 

The poster child for the local staple is the burger and cheese that drapes over the meat, indeed like a skirt. But no one is overlooking the fries. They are freshly cut, dusted with a secret spice blend and dipped in a house sauce. Equally craved: the sweet potato fries. 204 N. Tejon St., 5935 Dublin Blvd. #140

Bronze: Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews

These are an American classic: steak fries, thick and hearty and famously “fried to perfection with Red’s Original seasoning.” And famously, they come in baskets that keep on coming — a bottomless deal hard to beat. Multiple locations

Our recommendation: Green Line Grill and Streetcar520 

Best of the Springs voters picked two chains, so we’re picking two local spots downtown. We don’t deny Five Guys’ fries, but we’d say Green Line Grill’s similarly hand-cut beauties are even better. And the fries at Streetcar520 are good, but with the curry sauce they are great. Green Line Grill at 230 1/2 Pueblo Ave.; Streetcar520 at 520 S. Tejon St.
