Colorado Springs park closed after suspicious fires; arson suspect arrested

Palmer Park will be closed for several hours Wednesday as crews monitor for hotspots in the area after police said two suspicious small fires were started.

The Colorado Springs Police Department arrested 21-year-old Cadence Malkin after they said firefighters spotted a “suspicious person” standing on a rock formation near the fires, which were sparked near the southeast corner of the park shortly before 5 a.m.

Officials began monitoring the person, later identified as Malkin, with a department drone, and they started to walk away from the area before being contacted by police.

The fires totaled less than a quarter of an acre, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Crews managed to knock down the fire and establish containment lines around its perimeter while watching for hot spots.

Police said Malkin admitted to officers that she started the fires before she was arrested.

The Fire Department urged the community to be cautious Wednesday, as weather conditions call for “rapid” fire spread.
