Kickin’ It with Kiz: Bednar flirting with trouble in the Lumberyard if Avs don’t commit to one goalie

The Avs might not win the Stanley Cup if coach Jared Bednar insists on rotating goalies in the playoffs.

– B-Rad, putting out fires

Kiz: I hear the sound of trouble rumbling in the Lumberyard, if Bednar actually thinks throwing any goalie on the woodpile is going to make a stone wall in front of Colorado’s net in the playoffs. OK, I get Bednar’s reasoning. I like both Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood, too. So while I don’t doubt Bednar’s honesty when he vows to use both goalies with regularity during the playoffs, I do question the coach’s long-term commitment to that plan. If Wedgewood gets hot, would Bednar really bench him to let Blackwood come out and play? The NHL playoffs ain’t recess on the playground. When push comes to shove, as hockey’s rough-and-tumble postseason always does, Bednar will either stick with the netminder he trusts most … or the coach will have a goalie controversy that’s counterproductive to winning the Cup.

The Nuggets are the most talented team in the NBA, with the longest bench. If all their key players in the starting five, plus Peyton Watson, Jonas Valanciunas and Tim Hardaway Jr., stay healthy, the Nuggets are winning it all.

– Marko from Serbia

Kiz: Hey, when are you going to invite me to share a meal with you and go party with Nikola Jokic in Sombor? Tell you what: If Joker can carry this crew through San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Boston to win a chip, our favorite big guy will cement his status as a top 10 player of all time.

Does leaving Dick Monfort and his sons in charge of the day-to-day operation really change anything at all for the Rockies, despite the heavy investment from Broncos ownership? I just don’t see the day when this organization isn’t full of Monfort nepo babies.

– Reed, teller of unfortunate truth

Kiz: Dick Monfort will turn 72 years old before the month’s end. Charlie Monfort is 66. As I’ve reported, there has been disagreement between the brothers about making the Rockies a family heirloom or selling the franchise. The hefty financial investment by the Penner Sports Group put a big Band-Aid on the problem. As Dick and Charlie age, however, I expect those thorny legacy issues to again be a sticking point between them.

I hope if DU’s David Carle decides to enter the NHL coaching ranks at some point in the future, it would be in leading the Colorado Avalanche to more Stanley Cup championships. I believe this would be a perfect fit.

– Tom, happiness is the truth

Kiz: The knuckleheads here at Kickin’ It Headquarters have tried (and failed miserably) to play matchmaker with Carle and the Avs in the past. But now? Carle has built a bona fide hockey dynasty on University Boulevard. Why even think about moving up the street when he’s the big man on campus?

And today’s parting shot indicates that some frustrated Colorado sports fans might have to rediscover the joy of rabbit ears for local TV reception.

With the contract fiasco involving Xfinity and Denver7, will the NBA playoff games scheduled for ABC also be telecast on ESPN? Otherwise, I need a backup plan.

– Joe, always be closing
