L&L Hawaiian Barbecue ‘leis’ down roots in Broadmoor neighborhood

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue has said “aloha” to the Broadmoor neighborhood.

The largest Hawaii-based restaurant chain opened its third Colorado Springs location, and its seventh in Colorado, on April 1 at 2130 Southgate Road, Suite 101, in the Broadmoor Towne Center.

The brand is known for offering “Hawaii’s Plate Lunch,” a signature Hawaiian barbecue meal featuring rice, macaroni salad and a choice of entrée, with popular options including beef, chicken, short ribs and pork shoulder.

Other menu offerings include cheeseburgers, fried shrimp, pork with cabbage and more.

“Colorado guests have really embraced the Plate Lunch,” Ron Chadwick Jr., franchise owner, said in a news release announcing the restaurant’s opening.

He first discovered the brand while vacationing on Maui, noting its bold flavors and generous portions.

In 2014, Chadwick took over one of Colorado’s original L&L restaurants; today, he operates six locations across Colorado, including its three locations in Colorado Springs, as well as others in northwest Nevada.

“People appreciate the generous portions, comforting flavors and the welcoming spirit that L&L brings to each destination. Opening in Broadmoor allows us to share that experience with a new community,” he said in the release.

The newly opened 900-square-foot restaurant in the Broadmoor Towne Center “offers a casual gathering place for ‘ohana’ (family), professionals and visitors exploring the area,” the release said.

Hawaii-inspired décor and artwork provide guests an island setting.

“Ron’s path from operating a single restaurant to leading multiple locations across the region shows what’s possible within the L&L system,” L&L Hawaiian Barbecue’s Vice President of Franchising Josie Akana said in the release. “He is a strong operator who values the guest and his employees. Over time, he built strong teams, refined operational systems and expanded thoughtfully. His growth in Colorado reflects the kind of long-term commitment that continues to strengthen our brand.”

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue was founded nearly 75 years ago as a small shop on O’ahu in 1952, its website states. The restaurant became a favorite among locals who enjoyed its offerings of saimin, chili, fries, burgers and fresh, made-to-order plate lunches.

In 1976, Eddie Flores Jr. and Johnson Kam purchased the business and grew it across the Hawaiian Islands. In 1999, they expanded L&L to the continental U.S. and introduced the Plate Lunch format the brand is now known for.

The restaurant on Southgate Road is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue now has more than 230 locations throughout the U.S. and in Japan. Its four other Colorado locations are in Aurora, Boulder and Denver.
