ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been placed on probation for 18 months for a confrontation with his executive assistant soon after he was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with her. Moore was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded no contest in March to trespassing and malicious use of a telecom device. The maximum possible penalty was six months in jail, though Moore had no previous criminal record. Moore was fired Dec. 10 and was accused that same day of confronting the woman with whom he had been having an affair and blaming her for his firing.

MIAMI — Javier Mascherano is out as Inter Miami’s coach, a stunning move that comes only four months after leading Lionel Messi’s club to the MLS Cup title. Mascherano, a former teammate of Messi at Barcelona and with Argentina’s national team before reuniting with him as coach, is leaving the team. The team says it is for personal reasons. In Mascherano’s place as coach, at least in the short term, will be Guillermo Hoyos. Iowa will be placed on probation for one year, pay a self-imposed fine of $25,000 and is vacating four 2023 wins as part of the resolution to an NCAA infractions case stemming from the recruitment of former quarterback Cade McNamara. The NCAA found that tampering violations occurred in 2022 when coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant Jon Budmayr had impermissible contacts with McNamara when he was enrolled at Michigan and had not entered the transfer portal. Iowa previously suspended Ferentz and Budmayr from the team’s 2024 opener against Illinois State.

NEW YORK — Matt Crocker has quit as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation to take a new job in Saudi Arabia. The USSF announced his departure Tuesday just two months before the World Cup. A person familiar with the decision confirmed his move to Saudi Arabia. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Crocker’s new job was not yet announced. Crocker’s exit was unexpected, especially with the U.S. co-hosting the World Cup. Dan Helfrich, the federation’s chief operating officer, will oversee sporting operations. Crocker was hired by the USSF in April 2023. He previously served as Southampton’s director of football.

LONDON — England came out on top again in its latest clash with Spain winning 1-0 in a Women’s World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium. Lauren Hemp’s third-minute strike settled the game that leaves European champion England top of Group A3 with a 100% record. It was a repeat of last year’s Euros final and the World Cup final of 2023 and the latest head-to-head between these giants of the women’s game. The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be staged in Brazil.

Dave McGinnis, former Cardinals head coach and longtime NFL assistant, dies at 74

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Former Arizona Cardinals head coach and longtime NFL assistant Dave McGinnis, long known simply as “Coach Mac,” died Monday. He was 74. McGinnis had been in declining health and died Monday afternoon at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital with his family at his side. He had been the color commentator for the Tennessee Titans on game broadcasts since 2017 and was a constant presence on radio shows and team podcasts. McGinnis went 17-40 for the Cardinals from 2000 to 2003. He coached with the Chicago Bears and the Tennessee Titans and the Rams under coach Jeff Fisher.
