A wildfire southeast of Trinidad near the Colorado-New Mexico border grew to 450 acres Monday afternoon, according to information from the National Interagency Fire Center.

The Schwachheim fire was first reported on Sunday. It was about 25 acres late Sunday but grew overnight into Monday morning.

No containment was reported as of around 5 p.m. Monday

Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced on Monday that the Lake Dorothy Wildlife Area was closed because of the fire.

Gov. Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency in response to the Schwachheim fire, according to an emailed news release Monday from the governor’s office.

The verbal declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and other divisions to take all necessary and appropriate actions to assist with response, recovery and mitigation efforts, the news release stated.

The support includes engine and hand crews to assist with containment efforts, DFPC aerial resources and the DFPC-sponsored Type 3 Incident Management Team to manage incident responses.
