Manitou Springs begins water restrictions

The city of Manitou Springs enacted water restrictions Friday in response to this year’s Colorado snowpack, which is the worst in the history of climate recording.

“The best solution towards the sustainability of our water system is a community-wide approach towards decreasing our amount of water used,” stated a news release Monday from the city of the Level 1 restrictions.

The restrictions look like this:

Outdoor watering

  • Even numbered properties water Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Odd numbered properties water Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
  • Max of two hours per day from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Only 20 minutes per zone
  • Subject to a minimum fine of $100

Hand watering

  • Allowed at any-time if the hose is equipped with an automatic shutoff valve.

Drip irrigation

  • Unrestricted drip irrigation is permitted at any time.

Colorado Springs Utilities has not announced a change in water allowances, but it always requires residents to limit outdoor water to three days a week as part of regular conservation efforts. If Utilities’ stored water drops below 1.5 years of water supply, residents will be allowed to water only twice a week.

Denver has instituted Stage 1 drought restrictions, which require residents to limit lawn watering to two designated days per week.
