Bill Canda, a Custer County commissioner, was arrested Friday on suspicion of tax evasion following an investigation by state authorities.

Canda turned himself in at the Custer County Sheriff’s Office in Westcliffe, according to a social media post by the Sheriff’s Office. He faces a charge of one count of tax evasion, a class 6 felony under Colorado law.

Canda posted a $1,250 cash bond and was released pending future court proceedings.

The charge stems from an investigation conducted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and was requested by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office in August 2025. The case was later referred to the 12th Judicial District based in Alamosa for a prosecutorial decision.

Officials said the investigation had been believed to be closed without charges, but that information was inaccurate.
