I am writing on behalf of WPSD in response to Stephanie Dickenson’s April 8 letter regarding the WPHS cheer team.

We appreciate her advocacy for our students, and we want to respond with accurate information.

Ms. Dickenson’s letter contains several claims that are not accurate, and our community deserves the facts.

First, the team did not miss nationals due to a lack of funding. Attendance at nationals was ultimately prevented by circumstances beyond funding alone. This was confirmed by a cheer parent and the former head coach, contacted directly by a board member.

Second, the claim that the district asked the former head coach to return her stipend to reimburse donors is false. This was also confirmed through that same direct outreach.

Third, the fundraising form submitted to the district listed the purpose as “Cheer” — it did not specify nationals attendance. All funds raised did go to the cheer program.

Our CFO and Dr. Richey, Principal at WPJSHS, met with two cheer parents in early March to discuss this matter, and it ended with a clear understanding from both sides.

We have implemented immediate policy changes to the Cheer Program to bring it into alignment with other athletic programs: fees will be set by the Athletic Director, there will be no individual fundraising, all payments will be collected electronically, and postseason events will be coordinated through program clubs.

We invited Ms. Dickenson to meet with our CFO directly, and that offer remains open.
