A girl was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 north of Walsenburg Thursday after being flung from a Jeep.

The Jeep lost control and veered off the left side of the road while following a right-hand curve at about 3:15 p.m., 8 miles north of Walsenburg, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol.

The driver, a 31-year-old woman, tried to regain control and collided with several road signs. The damage caused the left rear door to open, and an unrestrained child was flung from the Jeep.

The driver and another child were taken to a hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries, State Patrol spokesperson Trooper Sherri Mendez said.

State Patrol’s vehicular crimes unit is leading the crash investigation. The agency did not share more information about the findings of their investigation so far.

That stretch of I-25 was closed but reopened later that evening.

Walsenburg, the seat of Huerfano County, is about 90 miles south of Colorado Springs.
