CDOT denies request for GMF camera
The Colorado Department of Transportation denied a request by Green Mountain Falls Marshal Sean Goings to place a speed camera on U.S. Hwy. 24 at the eastbound entrance to the town.
“In a study of 60 intersections in El Paso County considered dangerous by CDOT, the intersection at the entrance to town clocked in at 14th,” Goings said, speaking to Mayor Dixon and the board of trustees April 7.
But Goings has been doing his own research. Over several days, Goings said he tracked 120,000 vehicles, 45,000 of which were going at least 10 miles over the speed limit.
The camera would have been an addition to the two cameras Goings has placed around town, particularly near the park on Ute Pass Avenue.
“This is about safety for the kids,” he said.
The cameras yielded 345 citations in March and 245 in February.
“The speeders who live in Green Mountain Falls have decreased to less than 1%; Cascade and Chipita Park are starting to fall in line,” Goings said. “Most of what we’re seeing are those who live outside the community.”
In March, the fines for speeding brought in $700 net for the town, Goings said.
According to the agreement with Meta Traffic, the company provides the cameras and sends the tickets. For instance, of a $40 fine, the town collects $28, and Meta gets the remainder. In a school/ work zone, the fine is doubled.
According to an article in the April 9 section of the Colorado Springs Gazette, CDOT will place a speed camera near Manitou Springs and Cascade Canyon.
In other business, the board approved a ballot measure seeking a .05% increase in the town’s sales of 3%. If approved by the town’s voters in November, the increase is expected to add $47,508.50 a year for the four years, when the tax sunsets.
At the request of the El Paso County Department of Social Services, the board proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
After decades of the Green Mountain Falls Board of Trustees meeting at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month, Dixon and the trustees voted to change the starting time to 6:30 p.m., beginning in June.
