Elevated fire danger for southern Colorado Wednesday, Thursday; more rain on the forecast

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service’s office in Pueblo are forecasting elevated fire danger across southern Colorado for Wednesday and Thursday.

The region will see an influx of heat before slightly cooling down Friday amid possible chances for spotty, intermittent rain showers and storms, according to the Weather Service. Spotty, critical fire weather conditions are expected for Fremont and Huerfano counties, as well as the northern San Luis Valley.

Meteorologist Alan Rose of Gazette news partner KOAA said Wednesday will be warm and dry as highs creep into the 70s and 80s on the plains. A few showers in higher elevated areas are possible this afternoon, but the rain is not likely to touch the ground because of the dry air.

While the warm, dry weather will stick around Thursday, Rose said there’s a “slightly” better chance for afternoon showers and storms to form.

“Much like what we saw on Tuesday, showers should be fairly spotty across the Pikes Peak region,” Rose said.

Here is the weather forecast in Colorado Springs for the rest of the week, per the Weather Service:

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66 degrees. There will be a 50% chance of storms and showers in the afternoon. New rainfall amounts to less than a tenth of an inch, but higher amounts could occur during thunderstorms. Friday night lows will drop to 44 degrees as the chance for rain persists.

Saturday: Rain showers are likely with a possible thunderstorm forecast after noon. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 71 degrees. Showers are possible at night, though less likely. Nighttime temperatures will be around 42 degrees.

Sunday: There will be more chances of rain after noon, though it is unlikely. Skies will be mostly sunny, with a high near 70 degrees. The chance for showers persists headed into the night as temperatures drop to around 39 degrees and winds pick up to a breeze.
