Authorities believe they have caught a man responsible for setting eight fires near the El Paso-Pueblo county line over a short period of time Sunday morning.

Dana Rampel, 33, is accused of setting seven grass fires, along with one vehicle fire, near High Stakes View along the creek bed to the southwest, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The fires were unrelated to the one Monday in the Midway Ranches subdivision west of Interstate 25 near the El Paso-Pueblo county line, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cassandra Sebastian said. The Monday fire started at a residence, prompting a brief evacuation order while destroying two buildings.

A day earlier authorities were alerted to the fires at around 9 a.m. when the Hanover Fire Department requested law enforcement assistance after hearing reports of an active arsonist in the area.

Both the El Paso and Pueblo county sheriff’s offices responded, deploying drones across the one-mile area near the 21200 block of High Stakes View of the Midway Ranches neighborhood. The area has homes scattered amid open space near the El Paso-Pueblo county line.

The fires were quickly extinguished. No injuries or structure damage was reported.

Officials said the grass fires originated in the area and then extended to the vehicle fire. All of them were intentionally set, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Later that morning, deputies found Rempel near Indian Village Heights and Boca Raton Heights, around 5 miles away from where the fires were set.

Rempel, who was unresponsive, was given Narcan, an over-the-counter nasal spray that rapidly reverses opioid overdoses.

Rempel was arrested after he was linked to evidence found during the investigation. Both sheriff’s offices declined to offer more information.

Rempel was taken into custody at the El Paso County jail after being medically cleared, the Sheriff’s Office said. He faces charges of fourth-degree arson, along with two counts of arson and firing on woods or prairie.

Jail records show he is being held on a $50,000 mental-health hold bond.

According to court records, Rempel has two other active cases against him: one related to a felony theft and another related to a misdemeanor-level drug charge.

The fires were set amid historically dry conditions that are setting the stage for a potentially dire fire season.
