The man killed during a shootout with Colorado Springs police on Saturday has been identified.

Benjamin Greenfield, 40, was shot at least three times by three officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department after authorities say he fired at them “at least once.”

The situation started on the city’s east side in the 1200 block of North Academy Boulevard after the officers and a deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office spotted a “suspicious” vehicle occupied by a woman and Greenfield, who was known to law enforcement.

Authorities have not specified what was suspicious about the vehicle or how they knew of Greenfield. Court records show he had several criminal cases against him, some of which had been dismissed. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to criminal mischief for damages of $750 to 1,000.

Upon identifying themselves as law enforcement, police said Greenfield sped off, but the vehicle became immobile soon after.

Officers issued multiple verbal commands, demanding that the two exit the car.

The woman exited and was detained, but Greenfield allegedly refused to comply and fired “at least one shot” toward authorities.

The three officers fired back. The deputy did not, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Greenfield was transported to a local hospital, where he died. No other injuries were reported.

The woman’s involvement “remains under investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office said. She was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on an outstanding warrant for an unrelated incident.

Authorities have not released her identity at this time.

Per Colorado law, the Sheriff’s Office will take over the in investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per CSPD policy.

The officers have yet to be named.

CSPD will release a significant event briefing video, including “body-worn camera footage and other releasable facts about the case,” within 21 days, police said.

Public records show that Greenfield was a Colorado Springs resident.

According to Gazette data, this is the third police shooting involving Colorado Springs so far this year.

The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has not determined the legality of the officers’ use of force in either of the first two incidents, which happened in late January and early February.
