Gazette Preps rewind: Doherty, Rampart baseball split tight games; Pair of athletes shine in two sports

It’s midway through the spring season and Pikes Peak region athletes continue to find footing in their respective sports.

Some athletes dazzled in two sports in a 24-hour window while others left their marks in one sport throughout the week.

Below are some highlights from area athletes and events from the previous week.

14ers

Hadley Harmon, fr., Banning Lewis girls soccer – Just three games into her freshman season and Harmon has already earned an amazing stat line.

Harmon finished with five goals in the Stallions’ 10-0 victory against Ellicott on March 31 in just 60 minutes. Harmon tallied 12 points as she added a pair of assists.

Prior to her superb outing against the Thunderhawks, Harmon had one goal, which came in a 2-1 loss to Manitou Springs on March 19.

Sara Christensen, sr., Thomas MacLaren, girls soccer/track and field – The five-sport athlete continues to astonish no matter the sport.

Christensen tied a career high with five goals in an 8-2 win against Lotus School for Excellence on March 31 and had a season-high 11 points for the Highlanders.

After four games this season, Christensen is at 15 goals, which is four shy of her junior year when the Highlanders star finished with 19 in eight matches.

Christensen also ran at the Fountain-Fort Carson Invitational and won the 300 hurdles in 46.54 seconds and placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.26), 4×100 meter relay (50.74) and 4×400 relay (4:19.35).

Haddy Wiley, fr., Woodland Park, girls soccer – In her previous three contests, Wiley scored in each match and tallied five goals. Against Florence on Thursday, she managed that in one outing.

Wiley scored a career-best five times in the Panthers’ 7-1 victory against the Huskies and the freshman finished with 10 points.

Wiley scored her five goals in seven shots, which was her second-best performance of the year. Wiley scored twice on two shots in her debut against Vanguard on March 10.

Addison Dorsey, jr., Manitou Springs, girls golf – Had Dorsey shot 5-over-par on her final three holes, she’d still have earned the top spot Wednesday at the Tri Peaks League’s opening tournament.

Dorsey shot a 1-under-par 69 to scorch the links at La Junta Golf Club and the 33-player field. The Mustangs golfer won the title by 18 strokes as runner-up Lamar’s Tatym McTaggart finished with a 17-over-par 87.

On one-third of the holes, Dorsey birdied in an impressive round at the tournament.

Rose Katen, sr., Cheyenne Mountain, girls tennis – The Red-Tailed Hawks senior is 7-1 this season and has played matches at all positions. She’s shined in the No. 1 singles spot.

Katen is 4-0 as the No. 1 singles player and earned each of those in a string of victories last week. Katen collected each of her four wins in straight sets and didn’t relinquish more than three games to any of her opponents.

Her tightest contest of the bunch came Saturday in a 6-2, 6-3 win against D’Evelyn’s Addison Pham.

Olivia Shelton, fr., Pine Creek, girls lacrosse – Of her 17 goals through five contests, Shelton scored more than half of those last week.

Shelton scored three goals in a 9-8 win against Air Academy and earned a career-high five against Green Mountain in a 15-5 victory.

The Eagles’ attacker has at least two goals in five games this season and has 17 total with 23 shots on goal for .739%.

CJ Mullen, sr., The Classical Academy, baseball – What an outing for the Titans hitter. Mullen finished a 17-11 win against Peak to Peak with one of the best days of his career and had a game-high seven RBIs.

Mullen also had a pair of home runs, his first since May 17, 2025. Along with his seven RBIs and two dingers, Mullen had four runs, totaled four hits and stole three bases.

Dane Dial, so., Pine Creek, baseball – Dial was on point in the Eagles’ meeting with Lewis-Palmer.

Pine Creek earned a 2-0 victory and Dial ensured the Eagles’ season-low run total would be enough to defeat the Rangers. Dial fanned 11 Rangers batters in seven innings and allowed one hit.

It’s the second consecutive start where Dial allowed just one hit after he allowed one hit against Pendleton in a 9-2 victory March 24.

Isaac Sullivan, sr., Doherty, track and field – Sullivan left the field in his dust in the two-mile race last weekend.

In the 3,200-meter run at the Fountain-Fort Carson Invitational, Sullivan clocked a 9 minutes, 57.19 seconds to win and was the only runner to go sub-10 minutes.

His nearest competitor, teammate Zachary Chevalier, finished second in 10:11.19.

Libby Gutowski, sr., Coronado, track and field – Gutowski put more than 25 seconds between herself and second place in the 3,200 Saturday.

The Cougars distance runner clocked a 12:11.31 to win the race and collect a first-place medal at the Fountain-Fort Carson Invitational.

Teammate Evelyn Hackett finished in 12:37.28 for second.

Alfonso Ngaluafe, jr., Fountain-Fort Carson, boys volleyball – In the Trojans’ 25-18, 25-13, 25-9 sweep of Doherty, Ngaluafe’s passing was nearly flawless.

Ngaluafe finished with a match-high 28 assists in the Trojans’ sweep of the Spartans and that was the setter’s highest total in a three-set match this season.

His season high came in a five-set loss to Sand Creek on March 19 where Ngaluafe had a season-best 34 assists.

Carson King, sr., Lewis-Palmer, boys swimming and diving – The 200 individual medley belonged to King at last weekend’s Cheyenne Mountain Hawk Invite.

The Rangers senior touched the wall at 1:56.68 in the 200 IM. King won the event by more than four seconds over Discovery Canyon’s Levi Kruper-Peck.

His time is first among Ranger swimmers this season. King also placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.50, which also ranks first for Lewis-Palmer.

Cooper Lutze, sr., Cheyenne Mountain, boys swimming and diving – During his team’s home meet last weekend, Lutze had another strong diving performance for the Red-Tailed Hawks.

Lutze finished first out of 27 divers with 428 points to secure the title at the Cheyenne Mountain Hawk Invite. It marked his third victory in the event this season and eclipsed his score of 315.3 that he had as a junior at the 2025 event.

Aubrie Smith, fr., Rampart, girls soccer/track and field – Smith had quite a busy weekend. The Rampart freshman competed at the John Tate Steel City Fast Track Invitational on Friday and won the girls 100 dash in 13.03.

Smith also placed third in the 200 at 26.88, and was the only freshman in the event’s top five, and was second in the Rams’ 4×100 meter relay at 50.37.

On Saturday, Smith hit the soccer pitch and helped the Rams upend The Classical Academy. The forward scored a goal in Rampart’s 2-0 victory against The Classical Academy and helped her team improve to 6-1.

Close Contests

Girls soccer

Liberty 4, Discovery Canyon 2

Though the Lancers won this match by two goals, the Thunder kept it interesting in the second half.

Liberty built a 3-0 lead at halftime following goals by Addison Brandon, Harley Ellis and Laura Dragoo, and appeared ready to shut out the Thunder in the contest. But the Thunder put two goals on the board in the second half and cut the lead to 3-2 with less than 20 minutes left.

Then, in the 64th minute, AJ Parra nailed a shot that went over the keeper’s gloves and into the net to seal the victory for the Lancers.

Baseball

Game 1: Rampart 6, Doherty 5/Game 2: Doherty 13, Rampart 12

The Rams and Spartans split back-to-back games last week with both contests providing a wealth of entertainment.

In their first game on March 31, after a slugfest in the fifth inning where the teams tallied eight runs, the Rams only required one run in the seventh to secure the victory.

Luke Jackson, who entered in the seventh inning as a courtesy runner for Logan Winczewski after he was walked, scored on a wild pitch to give the Rams a victory.

Last Thursday, the Spartans scored eight runs in the second inning and built a 10-4 lead after four. But the Rams scored four runs in back-to-back innings to tie the game at 12-all ahead of the bottom of the seventh.

Davyn Gonzales hit a double for the Spartans and advanced to third following a ground out by Brody Noll. Romeo Diaz’s ground ball allowed him to reach first and sent Gonzales home for the Spartans’ win.

Air Academy boys’ lacrosse stellar one season after earning state runner-up

The Kadets have not lost a contest since last year’s state title game.

That says it all, but the stats offer more. The Kadets have started the season 9-0 and have outscored their opponents 148-38. Air Academy’s only game without double-digit goals was a 9-6 win against Steamboat Springs on March 21.

Alex Sirois is tied for first in goals scored in 4A with 30 and Chase Moody along with EJ Hines (28 apiece) are also in 4A’s top 10 prior to their tilt with 5-1 Ponderosa on Tuesday.

The Kadets look hungry and that’s a scary sight for their opposition.
