Deion Sanders poses potential spring exhibition between CU Buffs and CSU Rams
BOULDER — A Rocky Mountain Showdown in April?
Deion Sanders is ready to sign up for that.
As the Colorado coach continues to push for the ability for his team (and the rest of college football) to play exhibition games against other programs during the spring, he proposed an idea. It’s one that cuts out the logistics of paying to fly an entire team across the country for a few days.
“I would like to go down the street and play a home and away against Colorado State,” Sanders said Tuesday. “I think it’s only right. I think it’s a beautiful thing. We’re gonna sell (Folsom Field) out. We’re gonna sell their stadium out and it’s a two-year deal. We go home and away.
“I think it’s appropriate and you guys (the media) will get a lot (out) of it.”
Sanders originally posed the idea this time last year with Syracuse coach Fran Brown jumping in on social media and offering to fly his Orange to Boulder for it. The request was eventually denied by the NCAA.
“We should’ve let somebody else come up with it, then they probably would’ve gone forth with (the idea) by now,” Sanders said.
With the college football calendar simplifying this offseason with just one transfer portal window in January, the idea has resurfaced with the potential to catch on nationally.
A previous transfer window that existed after spring practices in late April and early May was removed after several high-profile coaches and programs canceled spring games in recent years. The cancellations came out of fear that other teams would try to sway their players into the portal after a successful spring game in front of a large audience.
Now that teams know their roster in the fall before the start of the spring, more coaches could get on the board with the idea of seeing how their teams match up in a competitive environment against a nearby program.
“We want to measure ourselves against someone else, not just ourselves,” Sanders said. “Like, if the offense is doing well, what does that say about (our) defense? And vice versa. We want to really measure ourselves against another worthy opponent that doesn’t know us like they do.”
Sanders said he would settle for a few joint practices like the NFL practice.
“Every other sport gets that opportunity,” he said. “I don’t know why we don’t.”
