Suspect shot to death after firing at officers: Colorado Springs police

A suspect was fatally shot after allegedly firing a gun at Colorado Springs officers on Saturday, law enforcement officials said.

Just before 11 p.m., Metro Task Force officers from Colorado Springs Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office saw a “suspicious” vehicle while patrolling in the 1200 block of North Academy Boulevard, near East San Miguel Street, on the city’s east side. The occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, were known to law enforcement, police said.

When the officers approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to drive away, but the vehicle got stuck. The female occupant got out of the vehicle, but the driver ignored verbal commands to exit the vehicle, even after officers “informed the male he was under arrest, and they informed him that deadly force could be used,” according to a blotter entry.

While the officers were trying to get the suspect to surrender, he allegedly fired “at least one shot” toward officers, police said. Three CSPD officers fired in return. The Sheriff’s Office deputy on scene reportedly did not fire a weapon.

Officers then removed the wounded suspect from the car and administered aid until medical personnel arrived at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police interviewed the woman who had been in the vehicle, but her involvement in the incident is still under investigation. No names have been released as of Sunday morning.

The sheriff’s office will lead the investigation of the shooting in accordance with state law. CSPD will release a significant event briefing video, including “body-worn camera footage and other releasable facts about the case,” within 21 days, police said.

The investigation was still underway on Sunday morning, April 5, 2026, after a police shooting that occurred at 11 p.m. on Saturday night. The police were investigating a truck that took out a fence in a McDonald’s parking lot at the corner of San Miguel St. and N. Academy Blvd. A suspect was fatally shot after allegedly firing a gun at Colorado Springs officers on Saturday, law enforcement officials said. (The Gazette, Jerilee Bennett)
