The Costilla County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss a replacement for the county’s top law enforcement official following the resignation of Sheriff Danny Sanchez, according to a public notice from the county.

Sanchez resigned from his post after the 12th Judicial District indicted him on several counts of official misconduct in connection with an October 2024 case that involved the discovery of unidentified human remains.

According to court documents, when Sanchez was alerted to the discovery, he mishandled the remains, knowingly treating them “in a way that would outrage normal family sensibilities.” Sanchez is also accused of failing to promptly notify the coroner of the discovery.

The former sheriff was indicted Thursday and reportedly resigned over the weekend.

Costilla County is about 150 miles south of Colorado Springs.
