A driver has died as a result of “complications” during surgery following a head-on collision with another vehicle on Colorado Springs’ north side, according to police.

The Colorado Springs Police Department arrived at the intersection of Briargate Boulevard and Lexington Drive Sunday night and found the two drivers with “serious” but “initially” non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police in an online blotter entry Tuesday, preliminary information indicates the car driving eastbound was engaged in a “speed contest” with another vehicle before the wreck.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital, where it was later reported that the driver of the westbound vehicle died as a result of “complications related to surgery stemming from the crash,” police said.

The drivers had “serious but initially non‑life‑threatening injuries,” police said.

Speed is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Police have not said if anyone was arrested or charged.
