A historically low snowpack has caused Monarch Mountain and other Colorado ski areas to close their slopes ahead of schedule.

This week will be skiers’ last chance to recreate on Monarch Mountain this season, with a closing day set for Sunday, according to the mountain’s Facebook page.

The ski area had hoped to stay open through April 12. Last year, the ski area closed April 13.

Organizers have created a week of costume-themed festivities for the mountain’s last week of the season:

Tuesday: Tie-Dye Tuesday

Wednesday: Western Wednesday

Thursday: Throwback Thursday

Friday: Flower Power Friday

Saturday: Sleepy PJ Saturday

Sunday: Anything PG goes Sunday

Monarch Mountain will also “go out in style” Friday with Ski Patrol Appreciation Day, bringing live music on the deck all weekend. Another event, the “Gunbarrel Challenge,” will be hosted Sunday.

The Khen/Monarch Ski Ballet will not take place this season, officials said.

OTHER SKI AREA UPDATES

• Ski Cooper near Leadville closed Sunday after barely notching 100 days on the season. The ski area typically stays open through the first or second weekend of April. 
• Glenwood Springs’ Sunlight Mountain and Steamboat Springs’ Howelsen Hill announced early closures last week with both hosting their last runs Sunday.
• Telluride Ski Resort announced an April 5 closing; same date for Purgatory also in southwest Colorado.
• Steamboat Ski Resort announced April 12, a week earlier than last year, as its closing date. Steamboat is among several resorts vying to make it to end-of-season parties they’ve scheduled.
• On the plus side, Breckenridge Ski Resort in Summit County hasn’t moved from its projected May 10 closing date and Wolf Creek Ski Area in southwest Colorado has 90% of its terrain open.
