After trade for Jaylen Waddle, J.K. Dobbins thrilled with Broncos’ ’embarassment of riches’

On the heels of the acquisition of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, running back J.K. Dobbins is thrilled with how good he expects the Broncos to be in 2026.

Dobbins was a guest Tuesday night on NFL Network. He made note of the Broncos getting Waddle in a trade last week from Miami.

“We got another guy that just came in in Jaylen Waddle, you know what I’m saying?’’ Dobbins said. “I feel poison because we got (wide receiver) Courtland Sutton, we got the young (receiver) Pat Bryant, we got a great (offensive) line. We got everything, right? We got an embarrassment of riches on this team of talent. I’m excited. I really am.”

Dobbins led Denver in rushing with 772 yards in the first 10 games before being lost for the season following foot surgery. The Broncos re-signed him earlier this month to a two-year, $16 million contract that could be worth as much as $20 million with incentives.

“It was a long, crazy process to get to that point,’’ he said. “But I’m happy to be home. Denver’s home and I’ve made a good connection with the fans out here. I love my teammates, I love my coaches, I love the ownership. I love everything about Denver, so it was great to get a deal done and be able to stay home where I think I will thrive. I was thriving last year but something unfortunate happened, but that’s part of the game. But this year, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Dobbins has battled injuries since he rushed for 805 yards as a rookie with Baltimore in 2020. He played in just nine games over the next three seasons due to torn ACL and torn Achilles tendon injuries. He missed four games in 2024 with the Los Angeles Chargers due to a knee injury.

Then came last year.

“The injury thing is like, it’s been so unfortunate for me because like when you look at some people you say, ‘Injury prone,’’’ he said. “You get rolled ankles, the hamstring strains or whatever you’re getting. The stuff I’m getting is like, ‘Done for the season. Let’s get some surgery.’ So it’s like, ‘Dang, like why am I getting these unfortunate things?’’’

Dobbins, though, has tried to keep a good attitude.

“I don’t see the injuries that’s something that’s like a downer,’’ he said. “I see it as some way to get better as a man, as a person. Physically, I get hurt, but now I’m going to come back even better. … I’m going to be fresh.”

Dobbins said “there’s a lot of unfinished business” after a season in which the Broncos went 14-3 and lost 10-7 to New England in the AFC Championship Game. He reiterated that he was close to playing in that game before the Broncos elected to play it safe and hold him out.

For 2026, Dobbins is intrigued about Davis Webb having been promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator and being assigned by head coach Sean Payton to call the plays. Payton has said he will continue to have some role in what is called.

“I think it’s going to impact me big time,’’ Dobbins said. “I think Webb is a fantastic play caller. So is Sean Payton. So, with the help of Sean Payton with Davis Webb, I think it’s going to be even better than last year. I think we’re going do some things that people, they won’t expect it.”

Dobbins’ mother, Mya Grounds, told The Denver Gazette two weeks ago from the family’s hometown in LaGrange, Texas, that her son had remained in Denver since the end of last season to work out and was in great shape. Dobbins said on NFL Network he had just returned from Mexico City, where he put on a clinic for young players.

“I love to touch the kids who don’t have it as fortunate as others and so Mexico City was a great opportunity for me,’’ said Dobbins, who speaks Spanish and spoke it to the players. “The kids were amazing. I had so much fun and they know football. They’re pretty athletic. It’s crazy how much football there is in Mexico City. … Broncos Country, it runs deep in Mexico City.”

Dobbins was asked if the Broncos could in 2026 be the foe of the San Francisco 49ers, who already have been selected to play a game in Mexico City. He said he doesn’t know, adding, “I plead the Fifth.”

Regardless of where the games are next season, Dobbins is excited about how good he expects the Broncos to be.

“It’s going to happen this year,’’ he said. “I tell you it’s going to be great.”

Briefly

Safety Tycen Anderson, who signed as a free agent last week with Denver, got a one-year contract with a salary-cap number of $1.5 million. His base salary is the minimum of $1.25 million with a signing bonus of $200,000 and game bonuses of $5,000 a game. He has a total guarantee of $450,000. … As expected, the Broncos spread out Waddle’s option bonus of $15.2 million, which they picked up Friday, among multiple seasons, leaving him with a cap number of $4.9M in 2016. … Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers, who had a formal interview with the Broncos at the scouting combine, will take a top-30 visit to Denver before the April 23-25 draft. … Colorado State cornerback Jahari Rogers, most likely to be an undrafted free agent, said he has been receiving the most interest from Dallas and Indianapolis. He said he spoke to the Broncos after the Dream Bowl in January and that “they’ve seen me this season a couple times and like the way I play.”
