Deputies from the El Paso Sheriff’s Office recently arrested an assault suspect after he barricaded himself inside a home, according to a Monday news release.

Rodney Cordova, 61, faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges including second-degree assault, menacing and harassment, officials said. He was being held on a $25,000 bond.

On March 18, deputies went to a residence in the 11150 block of U.S. 24, near Peyton, to serve an arrest warrant on Cordova, who was wanted on assault and menacing charges, according to the release. After deputies determined that Cordova was inside, additional occupants were able to leave the home voluntarily.

Based on witness statements and information in the arrest warrant, deputies believed Cordova had at least one firearm, officials said.

“Due to this information and the lack of cooperation from Cordova, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene,” the release stated.

After multiple attempts at communication, tactical officers deployed “chemical irritants” to get Cordova out of the house. He eventually exited the home, but was still initially resistant, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Pepper ball irritants were then deployed, after which Cordova complied and was taken into custody without further incident,” officials stated.

No injuries were reported.
