The longtime defensive back for Washington who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2002 is taking part in the national team trials this weekend in Chula Vista, California. At stake is an invitation to training camp next month and possibly a roster spot on the 2026 national flag football squad that will compete at the world championships in Germany this summer. It’s just another in a series of steps ahead of flag football making its Olympic debut at the 2028 LA Games.

Ohio State women shut out Northeastern 5-0 at Frozen Four to reach title game

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ohio State scored four goals in the final 10 minutes of the first period, and the No. 1 overall seed Buckeyes beat fifth-seeded Northeastern 5-0 on Friday in the first of two semifinals at Pegula Ice Arena. Ohio State (36-4), which set the program’s single-season wins record with 36, advanced to its fifth straight national title game to improve to 14-4 in the NCAA Tournament and 7-4 in the Frozen Four. Northeastern (29-9-1) was making its fourth Frozen Four appearance in program history and first since 2023 when Ohio State defeated the Huskies 3-0. The Huskies dropped to 5-7 in the NCAA Tournament. Olympic champ boxer Lin Yu-ting cleared for return to competition after approval of sex eligibility

Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan has been cleared to return to competition at the Asian Boxing Championships following a review of her sex eligibility. World Boxing is the sport’s Olympic-level governing body, and it announced its decision ahead of the Asian championships, which begin March 29 in Mongolia. Lin and Imane Khelif of Algeria won gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics amid international scrutiny over both fighters’ sex. World Boxing took over as the sport’s governing body last year. It implemented a sex eligibility policy last August requiring all fighters to take a one-time genetic test.

Transgender woman sues USGA and LPGA after being denied entry into U.S. Women’s Open qualifier

HACKENSACK, N.J. — A transgender woman seeking to compete in women’s USGA events has filed a lawsuit claiming that a policy change adopted in 2024 unlawfully barred her from participating in a U.S. Women’s Open qualifier last year. Hailey Davidson named the golf club hosting the qualifier along with the USGA, the LPGA and three LPGA officials in a lawsuit filed Thursday in New Jersey. She’s seeking unspecified damages. The USGA and LPGA changed gender policies for events in 2025 and beyond, declaring that players must be assigned female at birth or have transitioned to female before going through male puberty to be eligible to compete. Hamstring injury keeps Ronaldo out of Portugal friendlies against US and Mexico

LISBON, Portugal — A hamstring injury will keep Cristiano Ronaldo out of Portugal’s friendlies against the United States and Mexico. The 41-year-old Ronaldo hasn’t played since Feb. 28 when he limped off the field while playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has not included the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in his squad. Portugal plays Mexico in Mexico City on March 28 and the U.S. in Atlanta on April 1.

Trump issues executive order requiring CFP to avoid broadcasting conflicts with Army-Navy game

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has issued an executive order barring College Football Playoff and other postseason games from airing during the annual Army-Navy matchup in December. Trump directed the commerce secretary and the FCC chairman to coordinate with the playoff committee, the NCAA and media rights partners to ensure an exclusive broadcasting window for the storied rivalry traditionally played the second Saturday each December. Trump’s order makes reference to potential expansion of the CFP that likely would require an earlier start for the playoff. In the first two years of the 12-team format, the first-round games were the weekend after Army-Navy.

Thunder won’t visit the White House during trip to nation’s capital, a spokesperson says

WASHINGTON — The reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder will not visit the White House during their road trip to the nation’s capital this weekend. A team spokesperson says the team and the White House had discussions about a celebration of the 2025 champs, but “the timing just didn’t work out.” Visiting the White House has been a long-standing tradition for NBA champions, dating back to Boston’s trip in 1963. Teams typically schedule the celebration when a regular-season game brings them to the nation’s capital. The Thunder play Washington on Saturday.

Lawsuit claims negligence in death of former Yankees baseball player’s son at Costa Rican resort

PHILADELPHIA — A new lawsuit blames a Costa Rica resort’s owners and operators for the carbon monoxide death of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner’s teenage son. Gardner family members filed a negligence and wrongful death lawsuit Friday in federal court in Philadelphia. The March 2025 death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner at the Arenas Del Mar resort has been attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. Messages seeking comment were left Friday for the defendants.

Guardians won’t have to pay Clase, Ortiz while MLB continues gambling investigation and trial looms

The Cleveland Guardians won’t have to pay indicted pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz while Major League Baseball’s investigation continues into allegations of pitch-rigging for gamblers. Ortiz was placed on paid leave last July 3 and Clase on July 28, and they received their salaries while they didn’t pitch for the remainder of the season. They were indicted on federal charges on Nov. 9 and a trial is scheduled for May 4 but could be delayed. Clase has a $6 million salary in 2026, the final guaranteed season of a $20 million, five-year contract. Ortiz does not have enough service time for arbitration and makes around the minimum salary of $780,000.
