Just one day into spring, and there’s already a fling.

The second annual Spring Wonderland Festival, with its Mad Hatter Tea Party, will take over Old Colorado City on Saturday.

“We want to get people excited about Old Colorado City,” said Tiffany Dahl, social media manager and events coordinator for Old Colorado City Associates. “We have incredible and unique small businesses here. This event is a great way to highlight all that.”

The historic west-side area is home to more than 200 small businesses, Dahl says, and at least 20 of them will participate in Saturday’s mostly free event.

Arts and crafts stations, a beer garden, costume contests, music, magic, dance and more will decorate Colorado Avenue and Bancroft Park. The family-friendly event is free, though the tea party is $10.

Visitors are encouraged to wear outrageous hats and costumes in conjunction with the “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” theme.

“It goes back to how unique and diverse Colorado Avenue and Old Colorado City are,” Dahl said. “Mad Hatter gives space for every business to get involved or to highlight something.”

SIX THINGS TO DO

Mad Hatter Tea Party: For $10 you get access to a tea party set up inside a private tent in Bancroft Park. The Queen’s TEApothecary will provide hot and iced tea selections. Sweet treats will be available and magician Ray Andrews will do private shows. Teatimes are 1:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Register online at shopoldcoloradocity.com/events/mad-hatter-saturday-1.

Beer garden: Bancroft Park will be fenced off, so you’re welcome to partake of a beverage from Cerberus Brewing Co. and go on a walkabout. Arts and crafts stations will be set up, as well as 20 vendors from Old Colorado City and other local artists.

Music and magic: The New Orleans jazz and funk sounds of Poole & the Gang will fill Bancroft Park beginning at noon, interspersed with magic by Ray Andrews, and a performance by Ormao Dance Co.

Make your own hat craft station: Live up to the Mad Hatter name,and decorate your own hat. You buy the hat: mini felt top hat ($5), straw hat ($10), bucket hat ($12), black bowler hat ($15). The decorations are provided for you: ribbons, feathers, flowers, pins, markers and more.

Queen’s Court: A real-life Queen of Hearts will preside over the Queen’s Court at 2611 Colorado Ave., the parking lot across from Jake and Telly’s Greek Taverna. Check out 10 vendors, arts and crafts, and a photo booth area, where you can get a photo with the queen herself.

Costume contest: Kids and adults are encouraged to don “Alice in Wonderland”-themed outfits, though no costumes will be denied, Dahl says. IHeart DJ Lindsey Marie will host contests for kids and adults at 3 p.m. in Bancroft Park.
