The run by the Air Force women’s basketball in Las Vegas has earned it a freshly dealt hand.

The Falcons were included in the 48-team WNIT field, according to the postseason event’s website on Sunday night.

Details of the first-round matchup, to be played March 19-21, were not immediately available.

Air Force (16-18) petitioned for inclusion in the postseason despite its losing record. The successful case was no doubt bolstered by three wins in the Mountain West tournament in a surprise runner-up finish.

The team also has the superstar narrative working in its favor, as Milahnie Perry earned Mountain West tournament MVP despite not playing on the winning team. Perry set the MW tourney scoring record and also holds Air Force’s all-time scoring record and the three best scoring seasons in the Falcons’ NCAA Division I history (since 1996-97).

The Falcons join Army (24-7) in the field and are the only Mountain West team in the WNIT. Wake Forest is the lone team from a power conference.

The other Mountain West teams in the postseason are Colorado State (which won the MW tournament and earned a No. 12 seed vs. No. 5 Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament) and regular-season champion San Diego State, which joins Navy in the WBIT.

This will be the third postseason trip for Air Force, all coming in the past five years. The Falcons also appeared in the WNIT in 2022 and again last season in coach Stacy McIntyre’s first season at the helm.
