Man confesses to killing another during brawl at Colorado Springs home

A Colorado Springs man accepted a plea deal that will have him serve 20-30 years in prison for beating and killing 55-year-old Omar Olmedo two years ago.

Marquise Hutt, 39, confessed to an El Paso County courtroom Friday of killing Olmedo during a fist fight in the early hours of Feb. 29, 2024. Originally charged with first-degree murder, Hutt’s plea deal downgraded the charge to second-degree.

He will also be given credit for jail time he’s already served throughout the over two years it’s taken for a verdict.

The Colorado Springs Police Department found Olmedo lying on his back with a small pool of blood near him at The Lamplighter Mobile Homes near South Academy Boulevard. Olmedo’s face and arm was also bloodied.

He appeared to be unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He died on March 5, 2024, after days on life support.

Several months later, investigators connected Hutt to the beating. Blood was found on Hutt’s shoes, and traces of it were found on the driver’s side floorboard of his car, according to previous Gazette reporting.

Hutt is also a half-brother of a resident who was living with Olmedo.

“I knowingly caused the death of Mr. Olmedo,” Hutt told 4th Judicial District Judge Michael McHenry on Friday.

After serving time, Hutt is required to undergo five years of parole. His plea deal also dropped two misdemeanor cases against him.

The court with reconvene April 21 for Hutt’s sentencing.
