This week, the City of Colorado Springs reopened Costilla Street east of Wahsatch Avenue. The street was closed for four months as crews removed a former Santa Fe Railway bridge that spanned the roadway for decades.

The bridge had been out of service since 2000. Built wide, it accommodated the crossing of six different rail lines before the closure of the Santa Fe Railroad Depot, now the Catalyst Campus.

City engineer Ryan Phipps said last year that the demolition would involve removing sections of the bridge piece by piece.

Until 2024, the sloping street was the long-time location of the annual Pikes Peak Soap Box Derby, which has since moved to Monument.

The city said some “finishing work” remains on the project and advised caution when driving through the area.
