An individual who was in custody at the El Paso County jail has died following hospitalization, according to a Sunday news release.

The female decedent, whose name was not released, was being treated by medical personnel at the jail on Friday afternoon when staff members concluded that she needed additional care and had her transferred by ambulance to a hospital.

“Despite advanced medical care and efforts at the hospital, the individual’s condition worsened, and she passed away at approximately 11:34 p.m.,” the release stated.

The cause of death was unknown as of Sunday afternoon. Sheriff Joe Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation into the incident, as well as an autopsy from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, officials said.
