The Frozen Four rematch is coming back to Magness Arena.

After No. 7 Denver completed a sweep of Miami (Ohio) in the best-of-three quarterfinal series in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff, the No. 2-seeded Pioneers will take on No. 3 seed Western Michigan, who swept Colorado College, next Saturday at 6 p.m.

It will be the first postseason meeting between the two teams since last year’s Frozen Four in St. Louis, which the Broncos won in double overtime to advance to the national championship game.

David Carle’s team scored two empty-net goals Friday night in the opening game of the series before exploding for a 6-2 win Saturday night to win the series.

Six different players found the back of the net, with junior defenseman Eric Pohlkamp, sophomore forward Jake Fisher and freshman forward Kyle Chyzowski each registering a goal and an assist for multipoint nights.

The Pios have now won 22 of their last 23 meetings against the RedHawks and remain the only team in NCHC history to reach the semifinals of the conference tournament in every season since its founding in 2012-13.

The rest of the competition is single elimination and this year features all games on campus. DU and Western Michigan split the series 2-2, with each team getting a weekend sweep on the other’s home ice.

The Pios and Broncos also met in last year’s NCHC Frozen Faceoff, with WMU winning in the championship game, also in double overtime.

No. 1 seed North Dakota and No. 4 seed Minnesota Duluth each swept their series on the other side of the bracket and will meet next Saturday in Grand Forks, N.D.
