Varying amounts of snowfall were recorded across all elevations of the Pikes Peak region on Friday, causing disruptions for schools and air travel before warm, dry conditions return.

This was Colorado Springs’ first measurable snowfall in March and exceeded February’s total, which was just more than a trace on Feb. 20.

Friday’s storm forced Woodland Park District RE-2 to close and Manitou Springs District 14 to delay classes, while activities were canceled in Harrison District 2 and Lewis Palmer District 38.

Numerous morning and afternoon flights were delayed at the Colorado Springs Airport until the evening, but none were canceled.

Early local snowfall reports from across Colorado Springs recorded 1 to 5 inches of snow. Across the region, trained weather spotters reported 1.8 inches in Fountain, 3.5 inches in Monument and 6 inches in Woodland Park.

In the coming days, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures to gradually return to above normal, with forecast highs in the upper 60s on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

No precipitation is forecast in the next seven days. Friday marked the 10th day with measurable precipitation this year, weather service data shows.

However, Tuesday’s precipitation of 0.74 inches provided nearly all of the 0.79 inches of precipitation that Colorado Springs averages in March.

The NWS in Pueblo has also issued a record 19 red flag warnings to begin the year. The next-highest starts were in 2009 and 2017, when 14 warnings were issued at the beginning of the year.

The weather service has already issued more red flag warnings than in all of 2015, when there were 17 warnings.

Still, there are no widespread exceptional or extreme drought conditions in southeast Colorado, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The areas with drought conditions, however, have increased from 7.5% of the land area on Dec. 2 to 22.3% in Tuesday’s update.
