Huerfano County sheriff’s deputies arrested two people on Tuesday after they allegedly started a wildfire during a red flag warning on Feb. 24, according to a news release by the office.

Firefighters from five departments and several other emergency agencies spent nearly 12 hours putting out the 50-acre blaze that began around 3 a.m.

“Without their hard work, this fire could have been much worse,” a post on social media by the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office states.

The sheriff’s office did not clarify how the suspects, Collin Bates and Jana Dunn, set the fire or how they were responsible.

They were taken into custody on charges of setting woods or prairie on fire, criminal mischief, second-degree arson, fourth-degree arson and third-degree trespassing.

The investigation remains active.
