Erie native Jaccob Slavin, who played at Colorado College, was part of the first gold medal-winning U.S. men’s hockey team since the 1980 Miracle on Ice team that first convened in Colorado Springs.

Slavin’s gold medal capped a U.S. showing in Italy that had the snowprints of Colorado all over it.

There was the first U.S. gold in women’s figure skating in 24 years from Alysa Liu, who formerly trained in Colorado Springs and resided aT the U.S. Olympic Training Center.  Edwards’ Mikaela Shiffrin closed with a memorable drought-busting gold in her final race. Vail’s Elizabeth Lemley won in moguls, Aspen’s Alex Ferreira won in the men’s halfpipe with a golden final run, and Jake Canter, who was once placed in a medically induced coma after a life-threatening trampoline accident in his youth, took his place on the Olympic snowboard podium.

Colorado Springs pairs skaters Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea helped the U.S. to gold in team figure skating, and Lindsey Vonn of Vail, though her Games ended with surgery, defied the odds by attempting to compete with an injured knee.

On Sunday, there were some final competitions that included Hailey Swirbul (El Jebel) placing 19^th in the cross-country skiing women’s 50-kilometer mass start classic. Her time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, 9.7 seconds was 15:41.5 off the pace of gold medalist Ebba Andersson of Sweden.

The U.S. team piloted by Kristopher Horn that included Hunter Powell of Fort Collins placed 11^th in the four-man bobsled. The team missed the podium by 1.3 seconds.
