DENVER – Tylee Schultz’s right leg twitched as she attempted to put weight on it following a stoppage.

Schultz injured her foot earlier in the quarterfinals match and that compromised the Pine Creek wrestler who had one minute left in the third period to secure a win Thursday at Ball Arena. Schultz watched her four-point lead dwindle to 9-8 in her match against Denver North’s Rhys Bernier, but she never relented.

The Eagles 115 pounder was one of three Pine Creek girls wrestlers to advance to Friday’s semifinals and their team sits in fourth with 40.5 points after the opening day of the state championships.

Zoe Gabel (120) and Melanie Marin Lopez (190) also advanced to Friday’s semifinals and both competitors scored 11 points with a pair of first-round pins.

The Eagles are just half a point behind third place Chatfield, which has 41 points and 20 points behind Central Grand Junction, which has 60.5.

Pine Creek boys seventh in 5A with two in the semis

Brogan Trollope made swift work of his opponents in the opening round to secure a berth in the semifinals.

Trollope earned a tech fall in the first round and needed just 15 seconds in the quarterfinals to advance in the 175-pound bracket and he’ll face Brighton’s Ollin Quintana in Friday’s matchup.

Trollope will be joined by Gavin Weichelt, who also dominated in his run to the 157-pound semis. Weichelt scored a pin 54 seconds into his first round match and earned a 17-2 tech fall against Denver South’s Marcos Zapien. Weichelt will face Broomfield’s Nicholas Penfold in the semifinals.

The Classical Academy tied for fourth after opening day in 3A

Four Titan wrestlers advanced to Friday’s semifinals following two victories to open the tournament and TCA finished the day tied-for fourth with 39 points.

Andrew Richins (215), Hayden Kenney (285), Jackson Schipfer (175) and Nathaniel Perkins (132) all have a shot to clinch a spot in Saturday’s finals with victories in the semis.

Kenney and Schipfer bulldozed their opponents and both earned first round pins to advance to the semifinals. The duo also scored 11 each to give the Titans 22 of their 39 points.

CSCS’ Forrest Craddock advances to 2A semifinals

Craddock scored 10.5 of the Lions’ 14.5 points and earned a trip to Friday’s semifinals after a scathing opening two matches.

The Lions 138 pounder earned a pin with four seconds left in the first period to advance to the quarterfinals. Craddock then won his quarterfinals match with an 18-2 tech fall.

Craddock will face Swink’s Jax Kusel in the semifinals and the Lions senior has won 12 of his last 13 matches.

Manitou Springs’ girls wrestler Alex Traenkle pins two en route to pair of victories

The Mustangs’ 120 pounder scored a late pin in the quarterfinals to advance to Friday’s semifinals match.

Traenkle won her match against Berthoud’s Julia Schnell with 14 seconds left in the contest to advance in the tournament earn her second pin of the day.

Traenkle also finished her opening round match with a pin against Bayfield’s Elly Coey at 3:11 in the matchup to advance to her quarterfinals contest. In the semifinals, Traenkle will face Las Animas’ Audali Martinez.
