Danika Warren earns runner-up medal, Pine Creek places 8th at 5A state girls swimming and diving
Danika Warren nearly earned the Class 5A state diving championship. But she settled for second spot on the podium in Thornton.
The Eagles sophomore finished as a runner-up Wednesday with 466.80 points in the finals at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center and helped lead Pine Creek to an eighth-place finish at the 5A state swimming and diving championships. The Eagles finished the evening with 144 team points.
Warren improved her placement from her freshman season by several slots as she finished 12th last year at state. This year, Warren added more than 40 points to her overall score. Eagles sophomore Kate Campbell did finish 12th this season and scored nine points for Pine Creek and 411.10 in the finals.
Warren had the best individual placement on the team, but Bria Jones was Pine Creek’s top scorer with 31 points. Jones advanced to the finals in a pair of events: the 200-yard individual medley and the breaststroke and reached the podium for both.
In the 100 breaststroke, Jones finished fifth and logged a time of one minute, 4.44 seconds and cut .08 seconds from her preliminary time. Jones finished 10th in the 200 IM at 2:09.90.
Eight Eagles scored points at the meet and Addison Hobbs was the third competitor to reach double figures with 15. Hobbs missed the 50 freestyle finals by .07 seconds and placed 11th in prelims at 24.29. Hobbs also swam on the 200 relay team that finished sixth in 1:47.68 and shaved 1.05 from its entry time of 1:48.73.
