After Colorado Springs was buffeted by winds reaching 81 mph on Tuesday, the city should brace for another round, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the temperature in the city was 45 degrees. However, with winds blowing at 25 mph and gusts hitting 43 mph, the wind chill made it feel like 37 degrees, according to the NWS.

Conditions quickly evolved similar to Tuesday, with blowing dust and snow squalls possible throughout the region.

“A similar pattern is developing to yesterday over the region today,” the weather service posted on X. “Growing concern of blowing dust and snow squalls develops at around 1 p.m. today over the highlighted regions. Rapidly deteriorating conditions are expected underneath the squalls and plumes.”

Snow squalls are mainly expected west of Interstate 25 and in the San Luis Valley.

Just before 3 p.m., the NWS issued a blowing dust advisory for Pueblo and Pueblo County below 6,300 feet. The advisory warned of visibility as low as a quarter mile due to blowing dust and hazardous driving conditions.

“As showers roll off the mountains this afternoon, areas of blowing dust could become locally dense at times,” according to the advisory. “Be ready for a sudden drop in visibility to near zero. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park.”

It also advised people to “pull aside, stay alive.” Gusts may reach 60 mph, with sustained wind speeds between 25 and 35 mph. As of 4 p.m., I-25 remained open, and the Colorado Department of Transportation’s COTRIP map showed normal speeds on the corridor.

In Colorado Springs, the high reached 49. There is a 30% chance of precipitation this afternoon, according to the NWS.

Overnight, lows will drop to about 20 degrees with a 30% chance of snow, mainly before 9 p.m.

A high-wind warning was issued, effective from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Thursday. Winds are expected from the west at 30-40 mph with gusts possibly reaching 75 mph, the NWS said.

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, leading to possible power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” the warning said. The NWS advised residents to remain in the lowest level of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows.

Furthermore, a red flag warning is in effect for the third consecutive day, set to expire at 7 p.m. There are elevated fire risks due to the combination of dry weather, strong winds and humidity as low as 11%, according to the NWS.

The warnings came less than a day after a major crash on Interstate 25 killed five people and injured nearly 30 others. High winds caused “brown out” conditions on the highway, leading to the crash, officials said Tuesday. The crash remains under investigation.
