2 Pueblo bomb squad technicians injured as explosive detonates in processing

Two Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad members suffered non-life-threatening burns on Thursday after an explosive inadvertently detonated while the bomb squad rendered it safe to process into evidence, according to a news release by the city.

One officer suffered first-, second- and third-degree burns, while the other had first- and second-degree burns.

Both were transported for medical care and the officer who suffered third-degree burns was transported to a burn unit in Denver, where they remain hospitalized, the release states.

No one else was injured in the incident and there was no danger to the public while rendering the device safe.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting Pueblo police with the seized device and the ongoing investigation, according to the release.

It is unclear when the device was recovered, or what criminal case it may be connected to.
