A Custer County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is quarantining after biting a student during a basketball game at Custer Schools on Thursday, according to a news release by the office.

The Sheriff’s Office was providing routine security at the event when several students ran near the K-9 team, startling K-9 Zara and causing her to bite one of the students a “brief moment” later.

The bite caused minor wounds that were not noticed by the deputy or the student until a few minutes afterward, the release claims. All medical expenses will be covered by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.

Zara has no history of aggression toward the public and was chosen as a K-9 for “her sweet demeanor.” She also lived in a family home with several children, according to the release.

The K-9 is not trained as a “bite dog” or for handler protection and the incident prompted the Custer County Sheriff’s Office to reevaluate its policy for K-9s at school events.

“Her handler is the best handler that Zara has had,” the release states.

Zara and her handler received their certification from the U.S. Police Canine Association in November and they participate in weekly training sessions in El Paso County.

The incident was reported to the Custer County Public Health Department in accordance with protocols. Zara’s mandatory quarantine period is required by both state and county policy.
