Sajevic nets OT winner as Air Force completes comeback at Niagara
There was some drama on Friday night, but Air Force hockey saw it through for a fourth straight win.
Sophomore center Nick Sajevic netted his seventh goal of the season to complete the comeback for Air Force and give the Falcons a 2-1 win at Niagara in overtime.
The Falcons’ points leader scored the game-winner at 2:34 of OT.
Air Force (14-11-2, 10-8-1 AHA) trailed by a goal midway through the third period until a pair of senior captains turned the tide for the Falcons. Center Mason McCormick found his linemate Holt Oliphant for the score at 14:44.
“This game was not going in the right direction for us,” Falcons coach Frank Serratore said in a radio interview. “Not that we were playing horribly, but we just couldn’t get anything to go in. Niagara did a good job of protecting the good ice. Then at the 11th hour, Holt Oliphant scores a goal. Then we found a little magic with Sajevic’s goal. This time of year, teams either find a way to win close games or lose close games. Our team is finding ways to win those games. This group has great spirit and resilience and we earned those two points.”
Following a scoreless first period, host Niagara scored the first goal of the evening as forward Noah Hackett beat Falcons junior goaltender Dominik Wasik at 6:56 of the middle frame.
Neither team had a good night on the man advantage as each of the Falcons and Purple Eagles went 0 for 4 on the power play.
Wasik finished with 24 saves on Friday and Air Force outshot Niagara 44-25.
The series will conclude on Saturday when the Purple Eagles and Falcons face off at 4:05 p.m.
