A road rage incident involving gunshots near Garden of the Gods in November led police to arrest a veteran several months later, according to court documents obtained by The Gazette.

Jamie Havig, 49, is facing a first-degree attempted murder charge with extreme indifference after allegedly cutting off another vehicle several times and firing at it on Nov. 11. One round entered the rear driver’s side door and allegedly struck an unoccupied child’s car seat, court documents state.

The person whose vehicle was shot at told police the driver of a black Chevrolet pickup had blown through a stop sign while exiting a gun club on Elkton Drive and cut them off. The truck then continued to block the vehicle from passing along westbound Garden of the Gods Road, according to court documents.

The driver used traffic to get ahead of the truck, but the truck’s driver continued to pursue them. The truck caught up to the other vehicle several times and, at one point, swerved in front of it.

After the truck caught up again, the victim heard two loud “pop” sounds, but thought it was a tire issue due to their age.

The truck’s driver stopped at a green light before leaving the area, while the other driver stopped near the entrance to an apartment complex before driving home.

The driver reported the incident to the police 10 days after it occurred. It is unclear when they became aware of the bullet hole in their rear driver’s side door or the defects on the cushion and right armrest of the child’s car seat.

Colorado Springs police reviewed surveillance video and automated license plate reader systems that show a black Chevrolet pickup chasing another vehicle along westbound Garden of the Gods Road after leaving the gun club.

Havig and a female were listed on the truck’s registration, but the woman was not seen on video surveillance or observed in the truck.

Before the incident, Havig spent a “prolonged amount of time” shooting a rifle at the indoor range and then is seen walking to the rear passenger side of the black Chevrolet pickup.

It is unclear who entered the truck because of a 22-second gap in surveillance footage, but police believe Havig was the truck’s sole occupant at the time of the shooting because no one else was seen entering or exiting.

Police drove to Havig’s residence in Green Mountain Falls on Jan. 14 and saw the truck in the driveway.

The arrest affidavit signed on Jan. 28 does not state whether a gun was recovered from Havig, although an analysis of the bullet indicated the firearm used was likely a type of Glock.

Police told The Gazette that firearms were recovered, but could not specify further.

Posts on Havig’s social media show several types of firearms, including assault style and Glock weapons, and his profile picture shows him posing with one. It is unclear whether Havig actually owns these weapons.

Havig will have his initial appearance in an El Paso County courtroom on Friday morning.

Police were unable to release Havig’s mugshot to The Gazette because of “ongoing investigative follow-up,” a spokesperson said.
