The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday identified the suspect in a Colorado Springs shooting that injured a city police officer as 35-year-old Michael Foster.

The shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. Monday in the 2600 block of East Bijou Street after a fugitive apprehension operation when CSPD officers noticed Foster “acting suspiciously,” according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

When attempting to make contact, Foster showed a handgun while fleeing from police before he traded gunfire with two officers, according to the release.

The officer who was struck suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect remains in critical condition. Criminal charges for Foster are pending, the authorities said.

Under Colorado law, the Sheriff’s Office has become the investigative agency for the incident because it is an officer-involved shooting.

The Sheriff’s Office could not further clarify to The Gazette what Foster was doing that made his behavior suspicious.

CSPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the fugitive was apprehended. Police were previously unsure whether an apprehension occurred.
