Man with over 20 years of criminal convictions arrested in Colorado Springs
A 66-year-old man with an extensive criminal past is facing another set of charges after Colorado Springs police connected him to car and retail theft, court documents show.
Steven Smith, who authorities called a “prolific criminal offender,” was arrested in Colorado Springs last Wednesday, according to a blotter entry from the Colorado Springs Police Department. Court records show he has been convicted of several crimes, including his most recent sentencing of 24 years for aggravated robbery.
According to his arrest papers, Smith is accused of stealing a vehicle in Colorado Springs and using it to transport stolen items from Pueblo that he was trying to sell.
The vehicle, a red 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, was stolen Wednesday morning after its owner left her keys in it while she stopped to pick up food from a sandwich shop, the woman told police.
The Police Department’s Automated License Plate Reader spotted the Dodge by the Walmart located along the 3000 block of East Platte Avenue later that afternoon.
Investigators followed Smith for several miles, watching him stop and replace the Dodge’s license plate with a temporary one that they claim he stole.
As they followed, investigators say Smith was utilizing driving maneuvers called “burn moves.” The maneuvers are designed to identify if someone is following you. This includes frequent lane changes, sudden and frequent turns and acceleration in speed, an investigator details in Smith’s arrest papers.
Eventually, Smith stopped again at a parking lot located in the 2500 block of East Boulder Street, where detectives watched him try to sell merchandise they say was stolen from retail stores in Pueblo, according to the blotter entry.
He was arrested soon after. Police recovered the Dodge’s keys from Smith and returned the car to its owner. The stolen merchandise was also returned.
According to his arrest papers, Smith told the detectives that he knew the Dodge was stolen but didn’t say he was the one who did it. He also allegedly confessed to stealing the temporary license plate after initially denying it.
Court records show Smith has had several run-ins with Colorado law enforcement throughout the years. In 1994, he plead guilty to a misdemeanor harassment charge that put him in jail for a month. A year later, he plead guilty for violating a restraining order and served another month in jail.
He stayed out of jail for three more years before confessing to defrauding a hotel, which landed him six months in jail on a misdemeanor charge. Later that year, he was found guilty of first-degree motor vehicle theft and sentenced to three years in prison, according to his arrest papers.
In 2001, he pleaded guilty to three separate crimes, including forgery, motor vehicle theft and possession of a controlled substance charges. He was sentenced to six years in prison on concurrent terms.
After getting out of prison, he almost immediately went back. In 2007, court records show he took a plea deal for aggravated robbery and was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
The Gazette attempted to confirm with the Department of Corrections on Thursday whether Smith was released from prison early on parole. The prison had not responded as of publication.
Several other cases against him have been dismissed in court, records show.
Smith is scheduled for his first court appearance on his latest charges on Wednesday. The soon-to-be 67-year-old is being held at the El Paso County jail on a $5,000 bond, records show.
