A shooting between Colorado Springs police and a suspect left an officer with a serious, non-life-threatening injury and the suspect in critical condition, according to the police department.

The shooting occurred near the 2600 block of East Bijou Street, near Platte Avenue and Circle Drive, when police attempted to contact a “suspicious male” after conducting a fugitive apprehension operation in the area on Monday afternoon.

The suspicious person fled when police attempted to make contact and then showed a gun before firing it, striking a uniformed officer. At least two officers returned fire and struck the suspect.

Both received emergency medical aid and were transported to a hospital. The identities of the officers and the suspect were not released. “At least one” unspecified firearm was recovered from the scene by police.

The incident was isolated and there is no threat to the community, according to police.

Police could not confirm whether the fugitive from the initial operation was apprehended.

Numerous CSPD vehicles lined East Bijou Street and surrounding roads to process the scene, which may take several hours through the evening, police said.

Several uniformed members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene after the incident. Under Colorado law, the sheriff’s office will investigate the officer-involved shooting.

“I met with the Colorado Springs Police Department officer this afternoon, prayed with him, and am grateful to share that he is expected to be released from the hospital soon,” a statement on Mayor Yemi Mobolade’s social media account read.

Monday’s officer-involved shooting was the second in three days in Colorado Springs.

A woman was hospitalized Saturday after being shot while trying to reach for an officer’s gun, according to police.

At about 10 p.m., officers responded to a call about a man chasing a woman in the 1200 block of Delaware Drive on the city’s east side. The caller told dispatch that one of the parties was carrying a rifle, police said.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition, police said. She is expected to survive her injuries.
